INKTOBER 2025 Day #31: AWARD.
“What would a simian-based awards show be called? What would the name of the trophy be? ‘The Simian’ kind of has a nice ring to it. ‘And The Simian goes to…’
I have mixed feelings about awards and award shows. On the one hand, the ceremonies can be a lot of narcissistic pomp and circumstance full of self-congratulatory nonsense and out of touch, opulent displays. On the other hand, to be legitimately recognized for having accomplished or created something impactful is kind of nice. As much as much as I draw and create and generally do what I do because I have an internal drive to do so that often feels like a compulsion, I still have some desire for external validation. I’m not sure why that is or what it stems from. When I sit down to draw something, part of my goal is to create something I think looks cool. I don’t know how to articulate it, but it’s satisfying. The big challenge is that when I do produce something I like, my critical eye improves and all I can see are the flaws. Maybe that’s part of why I seek that external validation, that need to ‘wow’ other people. It brings me back to reality a bit and balances my perception of my work.”
