Project Description

I recently took my youngest two sons to Cub Scout camp for the week. While there, I was able to bust out my moleskin and a ballpoint pen and do some nature drawing. Clearly this is two separate sketches, and there’s a reason for that. The top was the beginning of a sketch in the Whittling Chip area (where scouts learn knife handling and safety) of a neat little knot in the picnic table. At the point that I stopped drawing, my youngest son, who should have been with the staff getting some instruction, excitedly came over and sat on the ground next to me to start carving away. I looked up to tell him to go back over to the group to learn and saw him, holding the knife in his non-dominant hand, slice down through one of his fingers. I jumped up and immediately started basic first aid (it was deep and right on the joint), got him to the nurse and then the emergency room for the afternoon. The little rock on a weathered picnic table was what I drew once we were back at camp, at the waterfront.
