INKTOBER 2022 Day #1: GARGOYLE.

As expected, I’m starting Inktober a few days late, and if I lose myself on each prompt the way I did with this one, I’m going to fall way behind this year. This illustration took me almost 8 hours.

I’ve never been a huge Batman fan. I am of the vintage to have watched reruns of the old Adam West show, I watched the animated series for a number of years growing up, and I remember being somewhat caught up in the phenomenon of the Tim Burton Batman movies. Other than having an older cousin read me a Batman comic when I was about 3 years old, I can’t say I’ve ever read a Batman comic. I have a massive appreciation for the character, his creators, and the impact on the industry, though. Batman is an icon. When I saw the first prompt this year was gargoyle, this was the first thing I came up with (the second was a PMD gargoyle, but this one was more interesting to me).

This was also a great opportunity to draw one of PMD’s alter egos: The Masked Plunger. I first drew him on a whim on a holiday card envelope a few years ago, and I found the idea fun. I think PMD has many alter egos, and this one was loosely inspired by Bill Watterson’s Calvin imagining himself as Stupendous Man. I plan to explore PMD’s alter egos in depth one of these days.
