Moleskin Sketch #30
Another year of observational sketching at summer camp. This was from my last summer at the Cub Scout camp. This particular sketch was from Fort Friendship.

I'm happy with the line work overall, but not thrilled with my handling of the landscape. Masses of trees are something I struggle with, I think I get lazy in the rendering when it's pencil or pen and ink, rather than something that covers larger areas per stroke like paint. Just another thing to
Elementary School Shout Out #3
This is my favorite of the three "shout outs", I'm a lot more comfortable and confident with my line work and the overall look of PMD. Plus, I played around with half tones! This was a bit of a sad one for me, as it marks the end of an era: no more kids in
Elementary School Shout Out #2
Two years after my oldest son moved on from elementary school, my second born did, which meant it was time for another yearbook "shout out" illustration. This is a great way for me to observe the visual evolution of Plunger Monkey. I remember being really happy with the way this one turned out.
Elementary School Shout Out #1
This was the first "shout out" I drew for my oldest son when he graduated from elementary school. The staff were soliciting short blurbs from parents and family to filter into the yearbook, but that wasn't good enough for my brain. I asked if I could do a little illustration, received permission, and a tradition
It’s Plunger Monkey Dynamo Time #51
Fairly content with my line work in this strip. I switched back to a more realistic rendering of my hair, not sure if I will stick with it or just waffle back and forth as the mood hits. Who needs consistency?
Blue Eagle Knight
I worked on this concept art piece off and on over the course of about 8 months, if I remember correctly. I was working on my Samsung tablet in the Sketchbook Pro mobile app, which is really nice for sketching and drawing, I'm not sure I'm thrilled with it for painting and special effects type

This strip was originally supposed to be one full panel, panel 1, but I planned poorly on the page and got the dimensions wrong. When I dropped it into the strip template in Photoshop, I was left with some space to fill, so I added that extra panel, which worked out for the best,
It’s Plunger Monkey Dynamo Time #49
I've become a lot more confident in my linework, and as a result, much happier with the results overall. Yes, I realize the stack of pancakes looks a bit like that fast food chain character (whose name escapes me at the moment...Mayor McCheese or something like that?), that wasn't intentional like some of my
Red and the Curse of the Unspeakable
This is the second commissioned cover I did for author Maryellen Worrell, which actually comes before the first book I illustrated for her. I had a lot of fun with this image, and I'm pretty pleased with the result. I returned to painting in greyscale first, and then layering on colors with gradient maps and
It’s Plunger Monkey Dynamo Time #48
I'm fairly pleased with my lines in this one, though the amount of detail I put into the fish and the texture I put into the pancakes gets time consuming. In the end, it's mentally satisfying, though. As far as where the fish idea came from, well, it came from my brain (I speak
Mother’s Day 2017
Another year, another hand drawn Mother's Day card for my amazing wife! I personally enjoy seeing the progression in my art skills as I inevitably look back at the last few years' worth of cards to plan the new one. I'm also noticing that I work with a lot more confidence, and a bit more
