INKTOBER 52 2024 Week #8: ASTRONAUT.

“Monkeys went to space before humans. Granted, they didn’t have much say in the matter, they were involuntary astronauts. It’s still an achievement for all monkey-kind. Sort of. Or maybe it was just unethical. It’s honestly not something I’ve spent a great deal of time thinking about until just now.
What I do ponder from time to time is what it must be like to look back at earth from orbit, and how much crazier it would be to stand on the moon. I have seen and read accounts of those who have done one or the other and the overwhelming takeaway seems to be an immense sense of awe and truly a new perspective on what it is to be a human down on earth. We engage in territorial disputes over boundaries we made up, fight amongst ourselves often at the behest of smaller groups of people who are in charge only because we allow them to be, but we collectively allow them to dictate what we do with our lives and how we interact with others even when it’s harmful. It’s a perspective I already hold, but I would image being able to take the entire earth and everyone and everything on it in at a glance would drive that point home in the most profound way. I don’t know if space travel will be a regular, accessible to everyone thing in my lifetime, personally the prospect of leaving the planet at all is pretty intimidating, but I kind of hope it will be. I think it might be the surest way to get humanity to set aside grievances and hatred and start realizing we all have more in common than not and that it is within our power to make life amazing for everyone, rather than just a few.”
