About Tobywan

My brain makes me draw stuff that isn't there, and this is where I put it.

Gallery Update: Current Projects

I’ve been working on a few side projects the last few weeks (like that single comic book page for Bill Gauthier), but I’m finally back to working on “my” stuff, which currently is coming up with some more t-shirt designs. I have a ton of ideas floating around in my head, a ton of fodder for ideas jotted down as notes, but only a small handful (5ish) of “finished” designs that are ready to be set up to sell. Those 5 designs are currently Plunger Monkey Dynamo related (with one squid), and while I think they’re cool…not everyone

Studio Stuff/Gallery Update: Double the Fun

In honor of the fresh chicken egg I had this morning (well, one of the five I had this morning) that contained TWO yolks, I’m giving you a Studio Stuff and a Gallery Update this Monday! Rejoice!

revery-clothes …dirty laundry?

Okay, yeah, I don’t use the traditional easel all that much these days, but that’s not why there’s clothes hanging off it. For starters, that pair of cargo shorts and that Star Wars shirt (I know you can’t tell, but trust me, it’s a Star Wars shirt) is what I wear as a character

Gallery Update: Shades of Black and White

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m working on, like, 32 things right now (one of which is that 10 Things children’s book, which is thankfully not 32 Things). I have lots of stuff floating around in my brain that I need to get out. But, when a dear friend contacts me and wants to do a small collaboration, I can’t say no.

One of my best friends, Bill Gauthier, is an uber talented author (when he’s not engaged in his day job of teaching or tied up being a

Gallery Update: Look! Up in the sky! It’s…whales?!

Some back pain flare ups and my eternal struggle with getting computers to like me kept me from making this post last week, so the regularly scheduled Monday Studio Stuff post will happen some other time, hopefully this week. But for now, a little blast from my past…

Toby-Gray-flying-whales-color-photo Look, flying whales! Nobody’s ever drawn THAT before…

First off, after a little digging, I’ve discovered this photo is the only copy I have of this image in color. This was another example of my early dabbling with incorporating digital into my workflow by scanning

Studio Stuff/Influences: Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind

For this Monday’s Studio Stuff, I thought I’d showcase another creator whose work continues to influence me. As I’ve mentioned before, I have tons of influences artistically, and I’m not writing about them in any particular order. I’m basically following what my mood dictates and what I happen to glance at on my shelves when I’m planning a post. These posts also aren’t meant to be reviews or synopses, I’m just going to talk about my connection to the work or the creator and how it has affected me.

(And yes, I know I can find better pictures online that are

Gallery Update: Some old “Wilhelm” Concept Art

Prior to my wife lovingly strong-arming me into the digital art world, I had been tentatively dipping my toes into those waters for several years. Like many, I had started out by doing traditional graphite or charcoal drawings and then scanning them and trying to color them digitally. This process was clunky for a lot of reasons, but a major road block for me had been trying to do all that Photoshop coloring and whatnot with a mouse rather than a stylus. At one point I tried to incorporate another traditional aspect one of my college professors, illustrator and teacher

Studio Stuff: Mr. Handface

where-the-eyes-are Mr. Handface resting at home amongst friends.

It appears that Monday is becoming Studio Stuff Day. At least for now. I’m still getting my blog legs under me (betcha didn’t know blogs had legs, didja?), but I’m trying to find some level of consistency that doesn’t interfere too much with, you know, actually being productive in my studio.

Anywho, today’s entry is: Mr. Handface. At least, that’s what I call him right now. Everything is subject to change in Toby’s Brain. Mr. Handface is actually just a cool, quirky “ring”/pair of googly eyes.

Sketchbook: Revery concept sketches

While I’ve been working on several other projects, trying to get this site up and going, trying to get the Etsy shop started, and other “stuff”, I’ve had my in-the-works graphic novel Revery on my mind. A lot. I’m itching to get back to work on it, and maybe, I dunno, finish it. I have more ideas for that world that I want to eventually get to, but I have to finish volume 1 first. I had pretty much figured I was done writing and thumbnailing it, but last night, on our way over to our local mountain for some

Gallery Update: Random Doodle-age

As I mentioned sometime last week, I’ve opted to put 10 Things on hold for a bit and put some effort into a handful of t-shirt designs so I can get my Etsy store up and running.  I have 3, in addition to the It’s Plunger Monkey Dynamo Time shirt,  PMD designs that are almost done, another one that’s in sketch form, and then several non-PMD more graphic designs that I think might be cool. The original plan was to pump them all out in a week, but I grossly underestimated how much time my obsessive self would take to finish

Studio Stuff/Influences: Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes

I’m adding a sub-category to this Studio Stuff installment called Influences. No matter who you are or what you do, someone or something has influenced you along the way. As an artist, I have many influences, but one of the biggest has to be Bill Watterson and his brilliant Calvin and Hobbes newspaper strip.

Calvin-and-Hobbes-collection My original Calvin and Hobbes collection…I think this is all of them. I let the kids have access to them, so they frequently disappear and get left in odd places…which has a certain Calvin spirit to it.
