My brain makes me draw stuff that isn't there, and this is where I put it.

Xmas Card Envelopes 2020, and Some Stuff

I think at this point it’s safe to assume all of the xmas card envelopes I illustrated are in their respective intended hands, so I’m going to go ahead and share them all here. As I mentioned…somewhere, I returned to the theme I stumbled onto last year: Totally Reasonable Uses for a Plunger. It proved fun in 2019, it was equally fun in 2020, and I’m much more confident about the potential of turning the idea into a picture book of some type. I’m building a list of “uses” to illustrate, and the envelope art will serve as some highly

Inktober 2020 Recap

Just a few months late with this one. I intended to do the annual Inktober recap right after I wrapped up, which was a week or so into November. But, life sidetracked me between October and November, and the crunch of getting the Xmas cards done (which probably still haven’t all been received yet) and trying at least to hit my 2020 goal of six new shirt designs all threw me off my game completely. If you want to know a bit more about that, or anything else from Toby’s Brain in 2020, you can read my year-in-review post from

2020 Year in Review

Well, here we are. 2021. Time to take a look back at the year that was to gain a little perspective while planning for the year that is. I could take this post in so many different directions, and despite having a little outline of things I want to remember to cover, I’m still not sure what I’m going to write. Should I stick strictly to what goals I started 2020 with and which ones I accomplished? Should I get into some of the personal “stuff”, since that impacts and is reflected in art? Should I go by project, or

Lee’s Dragons: Arctic Dragon

It’s that time of year again! My wife had a birthday, so she got another dragon illustration!

This year’s dragon for my wife’s birthday: the Arctic (or Polar) Dragon. This clocked in at about 56 hours and 4 minutes, give or take. It’s a slight departure from the previous entries in that it’s (digital) pen and ink, rather than a fully rendered digital painting. It was my wife’s request, she prefers my ink work I guess.
I studied some images of polar bears to get an appropriate gesture as well as looked up

PMD Fandom

Does two people count as a fandom? Let’s pretend it does. Okay, I do realize that between other friends and family, there are more than just two PMD fans, but these two stand out.

The daughter of one of my best friends from high school is apparently a PMD fan. This is her version of the xmas ornament I made and sent out a few years back and I love it.

The xmas ornament I made in 2016:

One Last Thank You

(I wrote this post over a month ago at this point, but I have held off on posting until I received my print, assessed it’s quality, and then sent prints to my parents and my siblings. Those prints are finally in their hands, so I can make this post without spoiling anything).

I’ll get to the title of this post in a bit. Be forewarned, this is going to be long, and perhaps emotional.

On June 8, 2020, my last remaining grandparent, my memere, passed away, two weeks to the day after her 99th

What Time Is It?

It’s Plunger Monkey Dynamo Time!

(That’s the answer to the question/title of this post…in case you didn’t read the title)

Did you happen to notice? I posted a new IPMDT strip for the first time in, like, a year. Literally. I had said a week or so ago that I was aiming to start working on the strip again this past Monday (which happened to be June 1. Now, I view dates as random in general, but sometimes certain things happen on certain dates and the coincidence makes my Brain happy. First IPMDT panel in a year on the first day of

Happy Mother’s Day, 2020!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. It is a very weird situation to try to celebrate the people in our lives that have played such vital roles during a pandemic when we can’t, or shouldn’t, be physically close. Whether it’s my own mother, my grandmother, my wife, my sister, my aunts…all the mothers in my life and my family have had a positive impact on my life, and it’s very fair to say I wouldn’t be here in one way or another without their love and support over the years. I love you all, and thank you.

So, Uh, How’s Everybody Doing?

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything. I’ve been mostly keeping up with the shorter posts on FB and Instagram, but I thought I might get a little rambly, so I figured a blog post might be better.

First up, we are all healthy and fine in our household, and so far I can say the same for my extended family. Having the kids home to do virtual learning is going okay, but it has plenty of challenges. It’s about as disruptive to my studio plans as summer vacation, but the important thing is is that everyone is safe.

New Shirt Update: It’s Plunger Monkey Dynamo Time 2.0!

Hey, look at that! Another new shirt already! We are 3 months in to 2020 and I’m still on pace for my goal of 6 new shirts this year, so that’s good. I turned this one around relatively quickly (for me), but then again, it’s not a super complex image. Then again this is me we’re talking about, and I could very easily have spent another several weeks spinning my wheels, noodling around on details and variations and second guessing myself and never being ready to call this one “done”. I have found that generally I need to force myself
